UTI Q & A

What is a UTI (Urinary Tracy Infection)?

A UTI, or urinary tract infection, is an infection that involves the urinary tract. This infection can affect the kidneys and ureters, but in most cases only affects the lower portion of the system, such as the bladder and urethra. Women are most susceptible to these types of infections, although men can get them as well. Treating the infection with antibiotics can help prevent it from spreading to the kidneys. If you believe you have a UTI, it is important to contact your doctor as soon as possible so that you can start the appropriate treatment.  Urinary tract infections that reach the kidneys can be extremely painful and cause serious problems if not treated immediately.

How Are UTIs (Urinary Tract Infections) Treated?

In most cases, a simple antibiotic will treat a simple UTI. Complicated UTI’s in older patients, diabetics, immunocompromised, and surgical patients may require stronger measures. It is often important to culture the urine prior to therapy. In the event that UTI's continue to recur with therapy, it may be necessary to perform diagnostic tests like ultrasonography, cystoscopy and sometimes CT scanning. Most UTIs can be treated successfully. Make an appointment with Dr. Shtainer to discover the best method of treatment for you.

Can UTIs (Urinary Tract Infection) Be Prevented?

A urinary tract infection, or UTI, can often be prevented when the patient understands its causes. Controlling blood sugar in diabetics is important. Always keep the genitals clean. This includes showering regularly and washing thoroughly after sexual intercourse. Many doctors recommend showering over bathing due to the increased risk of exposure to bacteria while submerged in the water. If you find that you are having recurring UTIs, it is best to talk to your doctor about what lifestyle practices you can adapt to decrease the problem.
